Dental phobia or fear of the dentist is a common ailment for people of all ages. We understand your feelings and are here to help you work through them. No matter whether it’s your child or yourself that’s afraid of the dentist you can rest assured that Mannum Dental has the means to make you feel more comfortable and relaxed during your dental procedure. We make an effort to make our practice a happy and positive environment so that you don’t need to feel anxious or uncomfortable while visiting the dentist. We also offer sedation dentistry as a means to relax you during treatment.

Intravenous sedation could be right for you if you have any of the following:

• Severe dental fear / traumatic past dental history
• Difficulty getting numb using anaesthesia
• Needle phobia
• Strong gag reflex
• Difficulty controlling movement due to systemic conditions, such as cerebral palsy or Parkinson’s disease

Intravenous sedation is performed by a qualified anaesthetist and patients will be in a state of extreme relaxation, almost like sleep. The sedatives place you into a carefully controlled state of semiconsciousness for the dental procedure. It is not the same as a general anaesthetic, but generally you will remember nothing of the dental procedure.

After the intravenous sedation session, you will not remember the dental procedure and it can take a little while to recover. Hence you will need a responsible adult to escort you home and stay with you for the remainder of the day until you are fully alert.

You must not drive a motor vehicle for 24 hours afterwards.

Our sedation dentistry option involves utilising ‘happy gas’ or nitrous oxide as a means to sedate your fears. Before your treatment you will feel a wave of calm wash over you, this will make you feel at-peace and content. Although you will still be conscious you will experience very little, if any discomfort and be in a blissful and steady state of relaxation.

Facing your fears is imperative to your oral health

If you’ve been avoiding the dentist because you’re nervous or frightened then make today the day you face your fears! It is recommended that you see your dentist at least twice year, as it is imperative to the maintenance of your dental health. If you don’t keep on top of your oral health, damaging diseases such as gum disease can become severe and deteriorate your teeth and your general health.
